Our History

A Stimulating Learning Environment

Dearcroft Montessori

Founded in 1968 by Peter and Barbara Phippen, Dearcroft is one of Canada’s original Montessori schools.  Since moving to our present Oakville location in 1976, Dearcroft has emerged as a highly respected leader in our educational community, and has evolved into a school of 170 children in Preschool, Elementary and Junior High programs.

Located on an historic estate within walking minutes of the town, Lake Ontario and community parks, Dearcroft blends into pleasant, treed surroundings on an attractive two acre campus.  Spacious classrooms, large windows, and a unique building design combine to provide a bright, cheerful indoor learning environment.  The outdoor area is equally pleasant with a variety of play equipment and ample space for games, climbing and other sports activities.

Coinciding with our 40th anniversary in 2008, our affiliate campus (West Wind Montessori School) joined us at Dearcroft (1167 Lakeshore Road East).  For an overview of the West Wind Montessori programs, visit the West Wind web site at www.westwindms.com.

We have developed a remarkable learning community with a low student to teacher ratio on an historic estate.

As a second generation Montessori educator, a Montessori parent and having been a Montessori child himself, Dearcroft and West Wind director, Gordon Phippen, has a unique perspective.  Our combined school features an optimal enrollment (approximately 175), highlighted by a strong community atmosphere and intimately scaled learning environment.  Supported by like-minded parents and dedicated staff, we have developed a remarkable learning community.  With a low student to teacher ratio, our staff enjoy ideal conditions for helping our students to achieve their personal and academic goals.  In close cooperation, all members of our school community recognize the strength of an outstanding team and are appreciative of the opportunity to work together in such a creative and exciting learning environment.

The best way to appreciate the school is through an actual visit, but the option of exploring our web site will give you an overview of the nurturing and stimulating learning environment we offer.  With a setting as unique as our approach, the calibre of Dearcroft / West Wind graduates reflects the quality of the education we provide.
