February Open House 2020

Open House:

Saturday,  February 8th 2020

10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Join us at our Winter Open House, meet our dynamic staff and students as we tour you around our  school.

Education is perhaps the most critical component of a child’s development, with a legacy that permeates throughout his/her lifetime. As parents, we want to give our children the best start, and most importantly our children need to feel fulfilled, happy, inspired and nurtured.

One of the greatest benefits of Montessori education is building real-life skills that carry over when it is time to enter the workforce. Problem-solving, creativity, team work and responsibility run through the veins of a Montessori child.

At Dearcroft Montessori School our experienced staff take great pride in offering a warm and engaging environment for students providing programs for toddlers to grade 8.

A Montessori education consciously designs social communities and educational experiences that cultivate the child’s sense of self-awareness and empathy. Montessori learning environments allow for the respect and celebration of individual spirit within people of all ages.

At Dearcroft/West Wind Montessori  School the comprehensive and methodical training of staff, excellent student to teacher ratios and long term relationships allow us to focus on the individual child’s development keeping in-line with Montessori best practices. All of our classrooms feature: individualized, child-centred programs, enriched programming tailored to meet the needs of each student; multi-age environments; low student-teacher ratios; hands-on experiential learning; individual and small group lessons and enriched music and French programming.

Dearcroft Workshops for November

DEARCROFT PARENT WORKSHOPS

Please let us know if you can join in for the following workshops we have set up for November.  These sessions are appropriate for parents from all of our classes, and we hope you can join us!

Tuesday, November 19th        Elementary Curriculum Session (Grades 1-6)

Anna Campbell, Director of Programming, Dearcroft

9:15 am – 10:00 am

Come learn about how students in the Junior and Senior Elementary program become their own ambassadors of learning and growing, and how we encourage and inspire a love of learning by going beyond and helping the student develop as a whole person.  Join us for an informative session to learn more about Montessori in the Elementary years and why it is such a natural choice.  Learn about how careful attention is paid to the development of language and mathematical skills and how these abilities assist in the integrated areas of history, geography, science, botany, zoology and peace education. Gain information on how our program allows for students to have consistency, challenge, individualized instruction, and programs tailored to their specific needs.  Bring your questions and find out how you can work closely with the school and teachers on your child’s development.

Wednesday, November 20th:            MYndfulness Movement Program

                                                        Deb Taylor

2:15 pm – 3:15 pm

This informative workshop will provide a brief introduction to the ‘why’ and the ‘how’ of mindfulness-based techniques, designed to give students relevancy to their lives to motivate ongoing practice.  Gain insight on Dearcroft’s 8-week mindfulness-based program for students from Casa through to Junior High.   Deb Taylor, our mindfulness instructor, will lead a variety of activities, including breath work while setting positive intentions, mindful movement for self-regulation, active listening for enhanced focus and sensory awareness for emotional regulation. These are easy to teach and lead, as parents find their favourites to continue practicing at home with their child.  A more regulated system of their own often comes as a pleasant surprise to parents as they practice with their child.  Parents will see how these engaging activities help our children and youth see through a lens of mindful awareness with compassion to themselves and others for a more ease-filled life.

Friday, November 22nd:         Vision and Learning Workshop

Dr. Gall from Oakville Centre for Vision

                                              2:15 pm – 3:15 pm

Did you know that nearly 80% of what we learn channels through our eyes, and is processed to make sense of what we see? Vision problems can contribute to eye-use difficulties which may not be detected during a basic eye exam. A patient may have 20/20 vision clarity yet still have visual interferences, limiting school performance or making the student work twice as hard for their academic success. Learning- related vision problems are treatable with diligent effort.

A Montessori education, due to its unique ability to identify and nurture individual strengths, does a remarkable job of creating graduates who go on to change the world. The founders of Google, Amazon and Wikipedia are fine examples of innovative, creative and fearless entrepreneurs who started their academic journeys in Montessori classrooms. They never stopped learning and continue to push boundaries… creating exciting new paradigms within their chosen fields. Their business cultures are outstanding examples of meaningful change and as individuals they have emerged as world ambassadors of inspired leadership.

Now Accepting Applications for Toddler Program September 2018

Oakville’s original Montessori School Toddler Program!

“Joy, feeling one’s own value, being appreciated and loved by others, feeling useful and capable of production are all factors of enormous value for the human soul.” -Maria Montessori

The Toddler Program is for children between the ages of 18 months and 3 years old. This is the period when children’s lives are the most formative, such that they absorb impressions from all aspects of their surroundings.

The Toddler Program is a community where a group of young children explore the world together. Toddlers work in a carefully designed environment where everything is child-sized. Children are expected to take on greater responsibility for themselves and eventually others.  Practical life activities include many of the everyday tasks children observe their parents doing at home. At Dearcroft Montessori our toddlers enjoy and take pride in caring for their environment, themselves and each other.

Our learning environment has a diverse set of Montessori materials, activities and experiences. We have a schedule that allows large blocks of uninterrupted learning time. The bright and beautiful, spacious classroom encourages social interactions.

We work closely with parents in bringing the home environment in sync with the school environment. It is important that all children feel happy and safe in our school community.

We encourage you to come and book a tour of our school.

Kicking Off Dearcroft’s 50th Anniversary Festivities! Pub Night at Moonshine Cafe!

We hope you’ll join us later this term for a special evening of celebration as we kick off Dearcroft’s 50th anniversary festivities!

Join us on Thursday, March 1st at the Moonshine Cafe in Kerr Village as we gather to chase away the ‘Winter Blues’... while celebrating Dearcroft’s 50th Anniversary and spring’s imminent arrival! Our MC for this milestone gathering will be long time friend of Dearcroft and resident of Oakville… CBC/Hockey Night In Canada broadcasting legend, Ron MacLean. As one of our country’s best known broadcast personalities and a truly iconic and beloved Canadian, Ron will have some great stories to share, offering insight into our country, our game and the incredible role that hockey and sport has played in binding together our great country from coast to coast to coast.

We are also excited to be joined by another ‘Dearfriend’, Mike Branton, one of Canada’s finest blues guitarists. Mike will be providing our musical entertainment with some great blues and classic tunes to warm up the first night of March. The fun begins at 7 p.m. and tickets will be available later this month.

We’ll be raising money that evening to support a new scholarship honouring the memory of globally acclaimed documentary film maker Rob Stewart, a close friend of Dearcroft who died tragically in a scuba diving accident last year in Florida filming while filming a sequel to his remarkable movie, Sharkwater… a stunningly powerful film that alerted the world to the plight of sharks, the barbaric and unsustainable practice of shark finning and the emerging environmental crisis in the world’s oceans.

Rob’s films including Sharkwater and Revolution were Canada’s most successful environmental documentaries. They won dozens of film awards around the world… inspiring countless people around the planet with their breathtaking cinematography and clarity of message. At the time of his untimely death, Rob was considered one of the world’s leading voices defending marine conservation and environmental stewardship. An inspiration to all, his passion for protecting sharks and all forms of life in the oceans brought him global fame. As an advocate for ocean health and the critical need for educating the world about sustainable living, Rob had no equal. His vision, film making excellence and generosity of spirit made his death at age 37 a great loss to Canada and the world. A new scholarship at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia has now been established in Rob’s memory to support students working in ocean science and carry on the critical research needed to support Rob’s message. In recent years, Rob visited our school on several occasions and empowered our students through direct engagement with his film making process as he edited his documentaries. He inspired our students and people around the world through the brilliance of his work. At Dearcroft we are very excited to be developing a new collaboration with Dalhousie University’s Ocean School, a program educating Grade 6-8 students about coastal management, ocean pollution, climate’s affect on the oceans and conservation of marine species. This will lead to future Expedition Education trips for our students to the Maritimes and field studies related to marine science. We will be forever grateful to Rob and Dalhousie (the university he worked so closely with) to bring such important information to the world.

Watch for further ticket information coming your way soon regarding our upcoming 50th Anniversary Winter Pub and ways you can help us moving forward in promoting environmental education.
