Experiential Learning in Senior Elementary Grades Four to Six

Quebec City 2018

Every year our Senior Elementary Students embark on an experiential learning opportunity. This year in 2018 students traveled to Quebec City for 4 days and 3 nights with their teachers.

On their second day in beautiful Quebec City students experienced hands on what it is like to be in a circus, they boarded a motor coach and departed for Ecole de Cirque de Quebec. On this journey they learned how to fly on the trapeze, juggle, jump on the trampoline, and take a general lesson on clowning around.

After a delicious lunch in Old Quebec, students took a guided walking tour of Old Quebec with local guides.  Students journeyed old buildings and proud monuments that lined the winding streets, picturesque lanes, and steep winding staircases. Also, on schedule for the day was a self-guided visit to Musee de la Civilisation.

Day three consisted of Beaupre Coast Driving Tour, in this rural area of Quebec, they saw the seigneurial system first hand.

By 9:45 am that day the students had a self-guided visit of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre Basilica which tourists and pilgrims visit this Romanesque cathedral and it hosts hundreds of thousands of tourists every year!

To share in Quebec’s colour past, storytellers introduced groups to some of Quebec’s most famous legends using large and beautiful wooden relief sculptures by master Alphonse Pare and his students.

On the last day the students visited Montmorency Falls the most spectacular natural wonders of the Beaupre Coast. Onto Soldier of the Martello Tower accompanied by British offers, the students learned all about the conditions of the soldiers living in Martello Towers. Exposed to a Quebec traditions the students enjoyed a traditional sugar shack meal followed by folk music, dancing and maple taffy served on snow!

Joy Day!

On Monday December 18th the students were filled with spirit; they were dressed in their best holiday attire as they celebrated Joy Day!

With the holidays fast approaching, the teachers at Dearcroft wanted to plan a special morning for all of the children at the school to enjoy.

In keeping with the Montessori Pedagogy, each child was grouped based on mulit-ages, ranging from 18 months to 13 years.  Each student was put into a special group: Santa, Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, and Rudolph and they rotated throughout the morning, spending time at each station. The older children helped the younger children with crafts, they read stories, they danced, and they held their hands through each transition.

Joy day was filled with music, laughter, critters, creatures, stories, sparkles, stickers, glue, music, and lots of fun!

From our Dearcroft Family to yours, we would like to wish you a safe and happy holiday!

Thank you for coming to The Fundraising Gifts From the Heart Shopping Event

Gifts from the Heart SHOPPING EVENT

On Friday, December 8th the students from the Senior Elementary class executed a plan they came up with after a visit to the downtown Oakville location of Ten Thousand Villages.  The students met the amazing energetic store manager Esther and learned that Ten Thousand Villages is largely a volunteer based, non-profit organization that works to empower artisans in developing countries through long term business relationships. Their fair – trade philosophy helps to empower marginalized populations by supporting their craft and providing a fair, stable income, enabling kids to spend their time in school instead of working.

From this initial visit and eventual follow up visits; ‘Gifts From the Heart’ – A Shopping Event was born.  The students wanted to put together an event to support Esther and the Ten Thousand Villages organization and learned they could fundraise for the Gift of Hope Fund. All proceeds from this event will be going to the Gift of Hope Funds, which has been established to help purchase equipment or for the emergency needs of artisans.

Students, teachers and Ten Thousand Villages’ volunteers worked hard to set-up the magical holiday shopping event in the West Wind Junior High Building.  Family and friends purchased hand-crafted items from Ten Thousand Villages, and books from Barefoot Books.  The creations made by Dearcroft students was exceptional! Everyone enjoyed the fair-trade, coffee, tea and hot chocolate and baked treats from the bake sale. Thank you to our Senior Elementary and Junior High students who handled the gift wrapping, managed the retail stations, and greeted all the visitors!

Following our event we heard from Esther and she expressed her thanks in the email written below.

“Dear all Dearcroft staff and students,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for organizing the Gifts From The Heart event held on the 8th of December. I really admire your organizational skills, all the extra time you put into this event made it successful. Indeed, it was a successful day for Ten Thousand Villages. My team and I enjoyed our time at the event.

All your efforts you have put into the event will be going to help the needy artisans around the world.
I have not balanced the sales yet, but we will be sending you the total amount of sales made on that date.

Please forward our appreciation to the parents who came to support the event.

Thank you, Thank you, and Thank you!”
